We, then, experienced the City and its wonders, including, a compact day tour set and governed by our desires and directions, which included cafes, impromptu stops, old cathedrals, limited shopping at native markets; however, unfortunately, NO nightlife, as altitude sickness is very real for us ``older`` types accustomed to life @ sea-level!
One day was reserved for cycling ``The Death Road`` and some incredible end of day of mountain zip-lining @ sunset ! Not to be missed for those seeking the adrenaline rush of 47 kil of downhill drops, winding roads and the wondrous, majestic beauty of waterfalls, narrow turns, scenic visitas ( that you ``best not`` even consider glancing ``while gravity beckons``!!). NICK'S arranged everything, all inclusive, having sifted through through a panoply of so called cycling professional/experts ( many NOT) and made sure we had the very best and safest equipment, guides and hosts through the GRAVITY BIKE tour team. Thank you , Linda, et al @ Gravity !
We next departed for a two day catamaran trip deep into INCA history on LAKE TITICACA. Island visits, ancient ruins, numerous side- trips and magnificent meals, dinners and native celebrations, including, a New Years Celebration Bash on our boat, NEW YEAR'S -- `` Bolivian style``!
We went on to visit the ``worlds largest`` salt flats left over from a long ago evaporated sea basin, stretching for 1000's of miles; like snow banks, mirror like when touched by moisture, reflecting the ( seemingly) surrounding snow capped mountains
in the distance. Stark, lunar landscape-like vistas, salt mining cottage industry visits and even a hotel built from the salt itself. Well, here the story takes a turn, we were suddenly struck ill, traveling sickness, complicated by our lingering and, as was the case with us, worsening altitude discomforts as the altitudes continued to arise to some 4400 meters ( more than 13,000 ft). We had some misery, but the NICKS ADVENTURES BOLIVIA TEAM never failed us. We had special meals, medicines and individual caring hearts to encourage us and help us find our way to recovery. The attention of ``Janeth`` , our guide in UYUNI, and all of the other drivers, cooks, care-givers demonstrated the knowledge, professionalism and conscientious attention to detail of those planning trips at Nick's ( including, Caroline, Litzy and, of course, that adventurous Aussie, NICK, himself--``G'day Mate``!), they made what could have been a disaster into an experience of how to adjust on the fly!
Finally, our trip, THANKS BE TO THE GODS!, culminated at the charming jewel of a city, SANTA CRUZ, BOLIVIA--@ sea-level or at least close enough (644meters). We were booked at the `` SENSES HOTEL, perfectly situated in the city's center on Plaza 24; after 4 nights of long, comfortable sleep-filled days and nights of sports bars. fine dining, cafes and more exotic tours with, again, two great NICK'S ADVENTURE BOLIVIA guides, ``Luis`` and ``Jose``, it was, finally, time to move on with our ``own adventure``, to PANAMÁ! Thank you, NICK'S, thank you BOLIVIA! We will not forget you. We will see you again, amigos!!
I had left my travel plans for Bolivia until the last minute and Nick's team bent over backwards to ensure they delivered us a once in a lifetime, action packed adventure through Santa Cruz, Sucre, Potosi, Uyuni and even dropped us all the way to the Chilean border.
We met Nick in Santa Cruz after a quick flight there from La Paz. Everything was arranged - from the airport pick up to our hotel the night before the tour started (even the dinner recommendation was first class). We then spent 2 awesome days with Nick exploring the gorgeous untouched sanctuary at Refugio los Volcanos. And what can I say- it was like being with an old friend. We saw condors, carried out CSI like investigations of puma vs porcupine crime scenes, swam in a pool under a waterfall and got an authentic and honest insight into life in Bolivia. Nick's passion and knowledge of Bolivian wildlife and Jaguars was impressive and infectious.
When we left Santa Cruz for Sucre we were genuinely sad to go, but we were again met with an awesome guide and driver for the balance of our trip through Sucre, Potosi and Uyuni.
Our next guide was a similarly enthusiastic and knowledgeable university student who gave us an interesting and frank education in Bolivian history and current culture. We learnt so much and saw so much. From exploring the depths of the silver mine in Potosi to bagging salt from the salt flats of Uyuni with the locals and posing for amazing perspective shots on the flats. When my husband and I got altitude sickness on the very last night, our guide and driver jumped in to our rescue and changed our route and plans to get us down to the lower altitude of Atacama asap. We couldn't have had a more positive experience. We will definitely be back for a jaguar tour with Nick's and I am confident it will once again be like meeting an old friend for a life changing adventure.
