About This Experience
Bolivia’s famous Death Road is best known for its dramatic cliffs, winding mountain roads and adventurous history. However, beyond this famous route lies one of the country’s most beautiful natural environments: the lush cloud forests of the Yungas.
Join Nick’s Adventures Bolivia for a private full-day birdwatching and nature tour exploring the Death Road, Cotapata National Park and the surrounding forests near La Paz. Unlike traditional Death Road excursions focused on mountain biking, our tour concentrates on the area’s exceptional birdlife, natural landscapes, waterfalls, orchids and remarkable biodiversity.
We travel through spectacular mountain scenery, stopping at some of the best viewpoints for photography, exploring birdwatching locations and visiting a private cloud forest reserve with its own nature trails. One of the main highlights is a guided hike through a beautiful forest of towering giant tree ferns, surrounded by moss-covered trees, orchids and dense subtropical vegetation.
This experience can be arranged as a dedicated birdwatching tour for serious birders or as a more flexible nature excursion combining birdwatching, hiking, waterfalls and photography. For travellers staying in La Paz, it’s an excellent opportunity to experience the biodiversity of Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forests without committing to a multi-day expedition.

For dedicated birdwatchers, we can concentrate the day on finding interesting and sought-after bird species across different elevations and cloud forest habitats. The Yungas are one of Bolivia’s most rewarding birdwatching regions, supporting colourful tanagers, hummingbirds, mountain toucans, trogons and many other forest species. The magnificent Golden-headed Quetzal is one of the region’s most exciting potential sightings, although encounters are unpredictable.
We spend time visiting suitable habitats, observing mixed-species flocks and searching for specialist birds along forest edges and trails. This option is ideal for birdwatchers wanting to maximise time in the field, with sightseeing and photography stops adjusted to their priorities.
For general nature enthusiasts, couples, families and photographers, we offer a more varied itinerary. The day combines the spectacular landscapes of the Death Road with waterfalls, forest walks, orchids, giant tree ferns and opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife.
Rather than spending extended periods searching for particular species, we concentrate on the area’s remarkable scenery and natural diversity. It is an excellent alternative for travellers who want to explore Bolivia’s cloud forests close to La Paz without undertaking a demanding trek.
Our tour begins with hotel pickup in La Paz, followed by a scenic drive towards the Yungas.
As we descend from the high Andes, the landscape gradually changes from open mountain environments to humid cloud forests. We make selected stops for photography, birdwatching and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
For dedicated birdwatchers, the early morning provides opportunities to search for active bird flocks and species associated with different elevations.
Continue along selected sections of Bolivia’s famous Death Road, also known as Camino de la Muerte or Yungas Road. The route passes through spectacular mountain scenery, with steep forested slopes, waterfalls, deep valleys and sweeping views of the eastern Andes.
Unlike conventional sightseeing trips, we take our time, stopping at interesting locations to photograph the landscapes, observe birds and appreciate the natural environment. Depending on weather and road conditions, we’ll visit some of the best accessible viewpoints and natural highlights along the route.
We continue exploring suitable habitats for birdwatching and nature photography. The Yungas cloud forests support an impressive diversity of birds, including hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, mountain toucans and other forest specialists. With luck, we may encounter trogons or a Golden-headed Quetzal.
We also look for orchids, colourful butterflies and other interesting plants and wildlife. Our guide will adapt the stops according to the group’s interests and the wildlife activity encountered.
We arrive at a private cloud forest reserve, where we’ll enjoy a freshly prepared picnic-style lunch featuring regional ingredients, surrounded by the beautiful Yungas forest.
It’s an opportunity to relax, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and appreciate the natural surroundings before exploring the reserve. Lunch and non-alcoholic drinks are included.
Following lunch, we explore the private reserve’s nature trails. One of the highlights is walking through an impressive forest of giant tree ferns, surrounded by moss-covered trees, orchids, bromeliads and dense cloud forest vegetation. The enormous fern fronds and lush forest create an almost prehistoric atmosphere, offering excellent opportunities for photography and nature observation.
The reserve is also of particular interest because of reported camera-trap recordings of the recently described Tilcayo wild cat. Our visit provides an opportunity to learn about the unique wildlife of the Yungas and the importance of conserving these remarkable forest habitats.
Depending on the time available, we make additional stops at suitable viewpoints, waterfalls or birdwatching locations before returning to La Paz.
The itinerary is flexible and may be adjusted according to weather, road conditions, wildlife activity and the interests of the group.
End of the Death Road & Cotapata full-day expedition.
The Yungas region is one of Bolivia’s most interesting birdwatching destinations, with different elevations supporting a remarkable variety of bird species. Some of the birds we may search for include:
hummingbirds & tanagers
quetzals, trogons & toucans
Many additional hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, parrots and other forest birds may also be encountered. The species seen depend on the elevation, season, weather and habitats visited. Birdwatchers with particular target species are encouraged to discuss their interests before departure. All birdlife is completely wild, and sightings of individual species can never be guaranteed.
In September 2026, scientists formally described the Tilcayo (Leopardus tilcayo), a small, spotted wild cat native to Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forests. This important scientific discovery represents the first newly described living feline species in more than 100 years, and it attracted international attention by highlighting how much remains to be learned about the wildlife inhabiting Bolivia’s mountain forests.
During this tour, we visit a private forest reserve where the Tilcayo has reportedly been recorded through camera-trap monitoring. Although encountering this extremely elusive feline during a daytime tour is highly unlikely, visiting its reported habitat provides an interesting connection to one of Bolivia’s most significant recent wildlife discoveries. It also reinforces the importance of protecting the Yungas cloud forests and the many rare species that depend on them.
One of the most memorable parts of this tour is exploring the giant tree fern forest. These impressive plants belong to ancient evolutionary lineages and give the forest its distinctive, almost prehistoric appearance. The humid Yungas environment also supports a remarkable diversity of orchids, bromeliads, mosses and other plants.
Visitors can enjoy guided walks through forest trails, stopping to photograph interesting vegetation, observe birds and discover the natural history of the cloud forest. The hiking is generally easy to moderate, although some trails may be uneven, muddy or slippery, particularly after rainfall. For visitors based in La Paz, this is an excellent way to experience the lush vegetation and biodiversity of Bolivia’s eastern Andean slopes in a single day.
We recommend comfortable walking shoes with good grip, a waterproof jacket, layered clothing, insect repellent, sun protection and a small daypack. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars, while photographers may wish to carry suitable cameras and lenses. Weather conditions in the Yungas can change rapidly, and rain or mist is possible throughout the year.
There is much more to the Death Road than its famous winding mountain route. Beyond the cliffs and dramatic scenery lies a fascinating natural environment of cloud forests, giant tree ferns, orchids, waterfalls and remarkable birdlife. Our private Death Road & Cotapata National Park birdwatching and nature tour offers an opportunity to explore this beautiful region in a single day from La Paz.
Whether you’re searching for a Golden-headed Quetzal, photographing spectacular mountain landscapes or simply enjoying a peaceful walk through the giant fern forest, this tour reveals a different side of Bolivia’s famous Death Road.
