Overview
El Palmar Nature Reserve is one of the best nature destinations near Sucre and one of Bolivia’s most undiscovered wildlife and hiking areas. Located in the inter-Andean valleys of Chuquisaca, the reserve protects a unique dry forest ecosystem that is home to iconic species such as the Andean Bear, Puma, Andean Condor, and the critically endangered Red-fronted Macaw.
Known for its spectacular canyons, valleys, cliffs, rivers, and endemic Yanchicoco palm forests, El Palmar offers some of the best hiking, birdwatching, wildlife photography, and nature experiences in Bolivia. The reserve is widely regarded as the country’s premier destination for Andean Condor watching and a hidden alternative to Colombia’s famous palm valleys, offering a more remote, authentic, and crowd-free experience surrounded by breathtaking Andean landscapes and local Indigenous culture.

TOUR OPTIONS
Our regular El Palmar tour focuses on the reserve's main natural and cultural highlights. This is the best option for travellers who want to experience the landscapes, hiking trails, local communities, birdwatching and unique ecosystems of the reserve. During this tour, we explore the famous Yanchicoco palm forests, scenic valleys, canyons, rivers, traditional community areas and key viewpoints for Andean Condor watching. This makes it one of the most complete nature experiences in the Sucre region. This tour is ideal for hikers, photographers, birdwatchers, families and travellers who want to visit one of Bolivia's most beautiful and remote protected areas without focusing only on one specific target species.
The Andean Bear Conservation Tour is a wildlife experience based at El Palmar Nature Reserve, Bolivia, focused on tracking the Andean Bear (Spectacled Bear) in its natural habitat through guided hikes in remote palm forests.
El Palmar Nature Reserve is one of Bolivia's most biodiverse protected areas, home to the Andean Bear, Puma, Andean Condor, Red-fronted Macaw (endemic to Bolivia), foxes, deer, and armadillos. It is considered one of the best locations in Bolivia for Andean Condor observation and is critical for the conservation of the endangered Red-fronted Macaw.
The tour supports community-based conservation by funding local employment, habitat protection, and human-wildlife coexistence programs in the region.
El Palmar is a wild natural reserve, not a zoo or a controlled wildlife park. Sightings of Andean Bears, Pumas, Condors, Red-fronted Macaws and other wildlife can never be guaranteed. Our guides and local partners use their knowledge of the area to give guests the best possible chance, but all wildlife encounters depend on weather, season, animal movement and natural behavior.
Hotel pickup in Sucre and a scenic drive of around 4 hours to the entrance of El Palmar Natural Area, with an optional stop in the historic town of Tarabuco for local crafts and photo opportunities. After lunch in the park, a guided walk leads to the K’ala Rumi viewpoint, with sweeping views over the reserve. Dinner and overnight in community-run lodging.
After a freshly prepared breakfast with the local community, a guided walk leads through the endemic Yanacocha palm forest, with a chance to spot Andean Bear or Andean Condor along the way and a small waterfall with natural pools at the base of the trail. After lunch with the community, transfer to a second community for a guided visit to the Cañón de la Misión rock formations. Dinner and overnight in community lodging.
After breakfast, a full-day trek of around 13km leads to one of the best Andean Condor viewing areas in Bolivia, where condors can be seen flying and bathing in natural pools. In the afternoon, the group hikes back to the community before departing El Palmar and returning to Sucre in the evening.
