Overview
Bolivia’s network of national parks and protected areas is one of South America’s most diverse and least explored. Covering over 22% of the national territory, these parks span a vertical range from Amazonian lowlands at 200 metres to Andean peaks above 6,500 metres — encompassing 12 distinct ecosystems and supporting an extraordinary range of species. Two parks hold UNESCO World Heritage status: Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in the northeast, and Tiwanaku (cultural heritage) near Lake Titicaca.
Madidi National Park in the La Paz department is consistently ranked among the world’s most biodiverse protected areas — a single park that contains more bird species than the entire United States. Adjacent to Madidi, the Sadiri Lodge operates at the park boundary and offers some of Bolivia’s finest birding access. To the east, Noel Kempff Mercado rises from Amazon rainforest to ancient sandstone plateaus via spectacular waterfalls, a landscape that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Lost World’. In the Bolivian Chaco, Kaa Iya National Park is South America’s largest tropical national park — a vast, wild, and largely roadless expanse of dry forest and grassland that shelters the continent’s most significant jaguar population outside the Pantanal.

Amboro National Park is the most accessible — 100 km from Santa Cruz, reachable by road with day tour options. Toro Toro National Park and Sajama National Park also offer relatively easy access. Madidi and Noel Kempff require flights into Rurrenabaque or Santa Cruz followed by ground or boat transfer.
Madidi is ranked one of the world's most biodiverse protected areas. Within its boundaries, researchers have recorded over 1,000 bird species, 260 mammal species, and thousands of plant species — all in a single park. It spans from 200m elevation in the Amazon to over 6,000m in the Andes, encompassing an extraordinary range of habitats.
The dry season (May–October) is ideal for jungle and chaco parks — trails are passable and animals concentrate around water. Sajama is best May–September. Amboro is superb year-round. The wet season brings dramatic waterfalls to Noel Kempff and lush Amazon habitat to Madidi.
