We begin with hotel pickup in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and drive east towards the Chiquitanía region. Along the way, we pass through rural landscapes, agricultural areas, and small towns that illustrate how the Santa Cruz region has developed and changed over time. The guide narrates the historical and cultural context of the region — the Jesuit Reductions, their expulsion from the Americas in 1767, and the extraordinary survival of the missions through the following two centuries.
Our first major stop is San Javier, one of the most important Jesuit mission towns in Bolivia. After lunch, we visit the mission church and learn about its architecture, history, restoration, religious artwork, and the role of the Jesuits and Chiquitano communities in shaping the region. Depending on timing and local opening hours, we may also visit the mission museum, town plaza, or nearby artisan areas. Wildlife companions along the road are common — Greater Rheas in the grasslands, Toucan Toucans, and a variety of raptors.
In the afternoon, we continue to Concepción, arriving around early evening. After checking into the hotel, we enjoy the atmosphere of the main plaza and can view the mission church from the outside at night, when the town is peaceful and beautifully lit.
🌙 Overnight: Concepción
After breakfast, we dedicate the morning to the Concepción Jesuit Mission Church — one of the most iconic churches of the Chiquitanía, built on the original 1709 foundations and meticulously restored. During the guided visit, we explore the mission’s history, architectural style, religious and artistic details, and the cultural importance of the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos.
When open, we may also visit the mission museum, local artisan shops, or workshops where traditional crafts and religious art are still part of the local identity. Art workshops in the town produce handcrafted items in the Chiquitano tradition and are open for visits on weekdays.
After lunch, we begin the return journey to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, arriving in the evening. Please note that the itinerary can be adjusted depending on weather, road conditions, museum opening hours, church access, local events, and client interests.
Extended Option
San Ignacio de Velasco is not one of the six UNESCO-listed mission churches, but it is an important gateway town for visiting nearby missions such as San Miguel, San Rafael, and Santa Ana. For this reason, it is commonly included in longer Chiquitanía itineraries.
