The Pampas del Yacuma is one of the easiest and most productive wildlife-watching destinations in Bolivia. Because the habitat is open — broad rivers, flooded grasslands, riparian forest edges — many animals can be observed from the boat or along riverbanks without the need for long jungle hikes.

The Bolivian anaconda (Eunectes beniensis) is a distinct species formally described in 2002, strongly associated with the wetlands and flooded grasslands of the Beni region. The Pampas del Yacuma is one of the most important and accessible places in Bolivia to search for this rare species.
Anaconda searches are conducted during guided walks through suitable wetland habitat. Sightings depend on season, water levels, temperature and the inherent elusiveness of the species — so they are never guaranteed. However, the search itself, moving through flooded grassland and riverine edge habitat looking for one of the world’s largest snakes, is one of the most exciting parts of the tour and especially compelling for reptile enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and serious naturalists.

The overland transfer from Rurrenabaque to the Pampas takes approximately 2 to 3 hours and passes through a mix of savanna, forest patches and roadside vegetation. This drive is an active part of the wildlife experience — we regularly stop along the route to search for three-toed sloths, capybaras, birds and monkeys in suitable habitat.
Other mammals commonly seen during the tour include capybaras — one of the most characteristic animals of the Pampas, frequently observed along riverbanks in large groups — squirrel monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, black howler monkeys and Brazilian porcupines.

Tapir, ocelot and puma occur in the wider Pampas region. These are uncommon and never promised, but their presence adds to the conservation value of the area.

The Pampas del Yacuma supports healthy populations of both spectacled caimans and black caimans. Black caimans — which can exceed five metres in length — are among the most impressive reptile sightings the Pampas offers. Night boat excursions are one of the tour’s most memorable experiences, with caiman eyes reflecting in torchlight along darkened riverbanks.

We depart Rurrenabaque by road, making wildlife stops along the route to search for three-toed sloths, capybaras, birds and monkeys. After reaching the Yacuma River we continue by boat to the lodge — a journey that typically produces excellent first sightings of pink river dolphins, caimans, capybaras, turtles, monkeys and birds.
After lunch and settling in, we head out for an afternoon boat safari. Depending on conditions, the evening includes a night boat excursion for caimans and nocturnal wildlife.
After breakfast, a guided wildlife walk through Pampas habitat gives us the best opportunity to search for the Bolivian anaconda, along with birds, reptiles and wetland mammals. After lunch and a rest, we return to the river for an afternoon boat safari focused on pink river dolphins, monkeys, caimans and birdwatching, plus piranha fishing.
The day finishes with a night excursion to spotlight caimans, frogs and nocturnal species.
An early morning boat safari takes advantage of the best light for photography and river wildlife. After breakfast we return by boat and then continue overland back to Rurrenabaque, with wildlife stops en route where conditions allow.

Rurrenabaque is the gateway town for the Pampas del Yacuma. The most practical option for most travellers is a short flight from La Paz (El Alto International Airport) with Amazonas Airlines or a similar domestic carrier — flight time is approximately 35 to 45 minutes. Overland travel from La Paz is possible via a long road journey of 18 to 20 hours, an adventurous option but rarely practical for most itineraries. We can advise on current flight schedules and help coordinate your arrival in Rurrenabaque as part of your booking.
