Nestled in the Mizque River valley between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, the community-run Red-Fronted Macaw Lodge exists for a single extraordinary purpose: to protect and provide access to the world’s largest surviving wild population of the critically endangered Red-Fronted Macaw (Ara rubrogenys). This brilliantly coloured macaw is endemic to the inter-Andean dry valleys of Bolivia and exists nowhere else on earth.
The lodge is a grassroots community conservation project that has helped protect this remarkable bird from extinction by turning the local community into its custodians. The surrounding inter-Andean dry forest and valley ecosystem supports over 130 bird species, making this one of the most productive and specialised birdwatching destinations in Bolivia.
This is one of the very few locations in the world where you can observe the Red-Fronted Macaw in a wild, natural setting. Hotel pick-up in Santa Cruz and the first leg of the journey west toward the Andes. The drive takes approximately 7 hours in total, with a planned lunch stop in the inter-Andean town of Samaipata — a charming colonial market town with excellent local restaurants and spectacular views of the surrounding cloud forest. The guide begins birdwatching commentary on the road, as the habitat transitions from lowland Santa Cruz through the Samaipata cloud forest zone and into the drier inter-Andean valley system.
Arrival at the Red-Fronted Macaw Lodge in the Mizque River valley. The afternoon immediately delivers: as the vehicle enters the valley, the distinctive calls of the macaws can be heard from the sandstone cliffs. Check-in and a brief orientation before the first dedicated birdwatching session in the valley with the specialist guide. Binoculars are provided. Dinner at the lodge and retire for the night.
A full day dedicated to birdwatching across the different habitats of the reserve, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Morning sessions focus on the key Red-Fronted Macaw sites: the guide positions the group at the rocky outcrops and cliff faces where the macaws congregate and roost, providing extended observation and photography opportunities of these brilliant crimson-and-green birds in their natural habitat.
Afternoon exploration of different areas within the reserve — the inter-Andean dry forest holds a rich collection of species endemic to this specific habitat type, many of which are rarely encountered elsewhere in Bolivia. The guide systematically works through the 130+ species recorded in the area. Optional swimming in the pristine Mizque River provides a spectacular experience as the macaws fly overhead. Evening birdwatching session at dusk when the macaws make their spectacular return to the roosting cliffs.
Early wake-up for the most productive macaw viewing window — the first two hours after sunrise when the birds are highly active, moving between roosting, feeding and socialising sites. This is the optimum time for close observation and photography. The guide is expert in positioning the group for the best sightlines and light angles.
Mid-morning trekking through the unique inter-Andean dry forests and exploring the dramatic rock formations that characterise the valley. This is a distinct and little-visited ecosystem with its own assemblage of specialised wildlife — the guide identifies the 130 bird species documented within the reserve as well as the interesting herpetofauna, mammals and plants. The afternoon can include a community visit, where guests meet the local families who run the lodge and learn how ecotourism has changed the community’s relationship with the birds they once persecuted.
Breakfast and a final morning birdwatching session in the reserve before packing for the return journey. The guide conducts a full species list review, documenting all birds observed during the tour and providing notes on any highlights or rarities encountered.
Departure from the lodge and the 7-hour return drive to Santa Cruz, with a lunch stop in Samaipata. The return journey provides additional birdwatching opportunities as the habitat transitions — the guide continues commentary and species identification throughout. Arrival at your Santa Cruz hotel in the late afternoon or evening.
