We begin the tour with pick-up from your hotel in La Paz. From the city, we travel south for approximately one hour toward the starting point of our visit to the Valle de las Ánimas, one of the most dramatic natural landscapes close to La Paz.
The visit begins with a short scenic walk along a rocky trail surrounded by impressive geological formations. The route includes an elevation gain of approximately 300 metres, leading us to a beautiful high viewpoint overlooking the valley.
From this viewpoint, we can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Andean landscape, including the majestic Illimani and Mururata, two of the most iconic snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Real.
The Valle de las Ánimas, or «Valley of the Souls», is famous for its surreal rock formations, natural craters, narrow ridges, stone towers, and dramatic obelisks. These formations create an almost otherworldly landscape, making this area one of the most stunning photography locations near La Paz and one of the most remarkable geological landscapes in Bolivia.
This part of the tour is perfect for travelers looking for amazing viewpoints, landscape photography, unique rock formations, and beautiful natural scenery in South La Paz. If we are very lucky, we may also see viscachas — small rabbit-like Andean mammals that live among the rocky slopes — as well as spectacular high-altitude Andean birds. Wildlife sightings are possible but never guaranteed. After enjoying the viewpoints and taking time for photos, we return to the vehicle and continue with the next part of the tour.
During the tour, we will enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic natural setting. This gives us time to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the landscapes of the southern valleys of La Paz before continuing toward Palca Canyon.
After lunch, we continue by vehicle toward the apacheta area that separates Ovejuyo from the entrance to Palca. This section of the tour offers more beautiful panoramic views of the southern valleys of La Paz, with the Illimani and Mururata mountains often visible in the distance. This is another excellent area for photography, especially on clear days when the snow-capped mountains dominate the skyline.
We then enjoy a scenic walk through the spectacular Palca Canyon, one of the most beautiful canyon landscapes near La Paz. This walk takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, following a route surrounded by impressive rock walls, eroded formations, dry Andean landscapes, and open views toward the Illimani mountain.
The combination of the canyon, the unusual rock formations, the quiet rural setting, and the snowy peak of Illimani in the background makes Palca Canyon one of the most beautiful and underrated sightseeing locations close to La Paz.
Along the route, it is also possible to see spectacular Andean birds, including species adapted to the dry valleys and high-altitude environments of this region. While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, the landscapes and natural surroundings make this a rewarding experience for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers who enjoy scenic places. The walk finishes in the small community of Palca, where our vehicle will be waiting for the return journey to La Paz.
After completing the visit to Palca Canyon, we return to La Paz, arriving at approximately 17:00 and dropping off at your hotel.
