Overview
Tucked within the Santa Cruz department, Amboro National Park is one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet — a meeting point of Andean foothills, Amazon lowlands and Yunga cloud forest. This full-day trek takes you into a remote and ancient corner of the park where time-worn cloud forest gives way to one of Bolivia’s most extraordinary natural sights: forests of Ancient Giant Ferns, some towering several metres overhead, evoking a landscape that has barely changed in millions of years.
Departing from Samaipata, the tour combines a scenic drive through the Andean foothills with a guided trek led by naturalists who know the park intimately. Expect dramatic cloud forest scenery, a picnic lunch among the ferns, and — for the patient and the lucky — the chance to spot signs of Spectacled Bear or Puma, both residents of this remote stretch of Amboro.
The trek suits nature lovers, photographers and travellers with a moderate to good level of fitness, with the route paced to the group across 5 to 8 hours of walking.
Pickup from your hotel or hostel in Samaipata and a scenic 40-minute drive toward the park, with stops for photos as the landscape shifts into cloud forest. At the entrance, your guide introduces the park’s history, ecosystems and the wildlife that calls it home before heading into the forest.
A guided trek through the Yunga cloud forest, following trails that lead to some of the oldest forest on the continent. Along the way, a picnic lunch is served surrounded by towering ferns and dense canopy — keep watch for signs of Spectacled Bear and Puma, both residents of this remote stretch of Amboro.
After 5 to 8 hours of trekking, return to the vehicle for the drive back to your hotel or hostel in Samaipata, with a camera full of cloud forest and giant fern photography.
